What is a pole barn?
Post-frame construction, sometimes referred to as pole-barn or pole-building construction, is a building technique in which structures are erected using large, solid posts or laminated columns as support, rather than wood studs, steel framing or concrete masonry. Just about any style exterior can be built using post-frame construction techniques, from open pavilions and metal siding barns, to brick office buildings or stone veneer houses.
Using posts as support for a structure has been a common building method for centuries. However, the invention of pressure treated wood and lightweight metal sheeting have increased the longevity and functionality of post-frame built structures. The first modern day pole structures were built to offer a cost-effective solution to agricultural buildings during the Great Depression and have grown in popularity because of their cost savings, time efficiency, and versatility.
Pole buildings offer many advantages.
Post-frame structures offer faster speed, fewer trades needed, and less load bearing walls than traditional construction methods and often have no effect on the aesthetics of a building. Though agricultural structures, such as barns, garages, and storage sheds, are still common applications of post-frame construction, virtually any type of low-rise structure can utilize this building technique. Other common uses for post-frame building include homes, commercial businesses, and churches.
